Frequently Asked Questions

How do we make purified/alkaline water?

GENERAL

The presence of impurities of water is most commonly measured in Parts Per Million (PPM) of Total Dissolve Solids (TDS). If a liquid contains 1 PPM of TDS of a substance, that means every million drops of water contains one drop of that substance. The main goal of water treatment is to reduce the amount of contaminants in the water. Note that "contaminants" includes any non-water substances, regardless of benefit or harm.

FILTRATION

Filters are a common way to remove contaminants from water. They rely on being porous, full of tiny, sometimes microscopic holes that ideally only allow water to pass through. Filters arent perfect, but theyre an important step toward cleaner water.

REVERSE OSMOSIS

Reverse Osmosis is a process that uses high pressure to force water through a semi-permeable membrane to remove contaminants from water. Our intake water measures ~500 ppm, and generally leaves at 12 ppm or less.

MINERALIZATION

Mineralization is the process by which we make our Alkaline water. It involves running water through a series of chambers filled with mineral beads which leach trace amounts of those minerals into the water. The presence of these minerals raises the pH of the water above neutral, making it alkaline. We like to maintain a pH of ~9.5 by supplementing with Calcium, Magnesium, and other minerals.

Water Treatment - Center for Disease Control

How is our water different from your sink/other stores?

We operate a high-quality commercial Reverse Osmosis system which is larger and more capable than anything you may find in a standalone water kiosk or vending machine. We're family-owned and we believe in our product. We drink it ourselves. Our system is maintained regularly with filter and membrane replacements and new disinfecting lamps and water quality is monitored reularly.

Why should I care so much about what i drink?

Your body is ~70% water.

What is pH?

pH is a measurement of the caustic or aciditic properties of a substance. Its written as a number between 0 (Highly Acidic) and 14 (Highly Caustic/Base) and scales logarithmically, which means each whole number step from 7.0 (Neutral) is 10 times more reactive than the previous step. Pure water has a pH of 7.0 and Alkaline waters will typically have a pH between 8.0 and 10.0.

What is BPA?

BPA, which is short for Bisphenol A, is a key ingredient in many plastic liners and containers, among other uses. Many people are concerned about the presence of BPA in their food and water, as it has the potential to leach from these plastic containers. The leaching of BPA from these plastics and resins is correlated with temperature, often when food is heated in a plastic container using a microwave. Adverse effects of BPA exposure have been exhibited in non-human infants, so it's reasonable to be concerned about exposure. Most people have some amount of BPA or other plastic substances in their bodies, as plastic is present in every part of our lives. An effective way to reduce exposure to BPA and other microplastics is to use containers made of materials like glass, which contain no resins or plastic linings.

What is water fluoridation?

Fluoride is a substance that occurs naturally in some water sources or may be added by a treatment facility to promote dental health by reducing cavities. This is because Fluorine ions bond with tooth enamel to form a protective structure of Fluoroapatite. The amount of fluoride needed to accomplish this is relatively low, and so fluoride concentrations in municipal water supplies are typically around 1 ppm or less. Fluoride is subject to controversy by critics who espouse the adverse effects of fluoride exposure; however, a common symptom, Fluorosis, which causes white spots on the teeth, only occurs after regular exposure to high concentrations akin to eating your toothpaste instead of brushing with it.

Community Water Fluoridation - Center for Disease Control

Is Fluoride Dangerous?

Exposure to high concentrations of fluoride can lead to adverse health effects of varying seriousness. Most municipal water supplies have ~1 ppm of fluoride in their water (Henderson's water contains ~0.7 ppm), and if you attempted to poison yourself this way you would actually drown before experiencing any adverse effects from fluoride. As stated above, you would have to start eating tubes of fluoridated toothpaste for any symptoms to arise. Approximately 68% of fluoride toxicity cases are due to toothpaste ingestion, and over 80% of cases occured in kids under 6. If you or someone you know has been exposed to high concentrations of fluoride, contact Poison Control, as acute symptoms are uncommon, but dangerous and potentially fatal.

Do we fluoridate our water?

No. In fact we remove over 97% of the fluoride present in our intake supply, which the City of Henderson says contains roughly 0.7 ppm (parts per million) of the substance.
